10. Cholera

Around 400 B.C.E., the Athenian physician Hippocrates catalogued the diseases of his world. Cholera was on the list. But while Hippocrates provides the first proof of cholera beyond a reasonable doubt, the disease likely originated along the Ganges River while Athens was still a very young place.

Cholera lives in many of the world’s water sources, but it’s most dangerous when it has an environment in which there are many people among whom it can spread. The Ganges River happens to be one of the most ancient locations of humanpopulation density, and so it was long, long ago that upstream users gathered in the numbers needed to pollute the water for those downstream. In other words, as more people become infected with cholera, they pollute the water supply with more bacteria, which in turn infects more people.

Interestingly, the same problem might have been a major factor in the loss of troops in Hannibal’s march across the Alps. With a 50,000-soldier train, the troops and animals in front would have encountered pristine mountain streams, but those in back would have been forced to deal with putrid and potentially cholera-rich water.

9. Typhoid

From 430 to 426 B.C.E., a great plague swept through the city-state of Athens. The historian Thucydides describes the symptoms this way:

People in good health were all of a sudden attacked by violent heats in the head and the throat or tongue, becoming bloody and emitting an unnatural and fetid breath. When it fixed in the stomach, it upset it; and discharges of bile of every kind named by physicians ensued, accompanied by very great distress. If they passed this stage, and the disease descended further into the bowels, inducing a violent ulceration there accompanied by severe diarrhea, this brought on a weakness which was generally fatal.

8. Leprosy

The Bible passage Leviticus 13:2 reads, “When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, a scab, or bright spot, and it be in the skin of his flesh like the plague of leprosy; then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests.”

But this isn’t the first concrete mention of the disease. That honor goes to the Egyptian “Ebers Papyrus,” written in 1550 B.C.E., which recommends, “If you examine a large tumor of Khonsu in any part of a man and it is terrible and it has made many swellings. Something has appeared in it like that in which there is air … Then you shall say concerning it: It is a swelling of Khonsu. You should not do anything against it”.

While typhoid and cholera are fairly straightforward in their aggressive spread through water sources, leprosy relies on another dispersion strategy — that of dormancy. People can carry the bacteria that cause leprosy for 20 years or more before showing symptoms, and during this time can spread the disease.

One historical challenge in treating leprosy was diagnosis. In its early stages of expression, leprosy looks much like syphilis and somewhat like psoriasis. Misdiagnosis landed many psoriasis sufferers in leper colonies where many eventually did, ironically, contract and die from leprosy due to increased exposure.

7. Smallpox

Generally, the goal of mummification is to preserve soft tissue. So, as you would expect, Egypt provides a treasure trove of information on ancient, soft tissue diseases.

One of the first researchers to turn a paleopathological eye on Egyptian mummies was Sir Marc Armand Ruffer, who in his 1921 book “Studies of the Palaeopathology of Egypt” described three mummies with “dome shaped vesicles” extremely similar to those expected of smallpox. The most ancient of these mummies was dated 1580 B.C.E., and the most recent was the mummy of Ramses V, who died in 1157 B.C.E.

After his own inspection of the mummy, Donald R. Hopkins, who participated in the World Health Organization’s Smallpox Eradication Program, wrote of Ramses V, “Inspection of the mummy revealed a rash of elevated ‘pustules’, each about 2 to 4 millimeters in diameter, that was most distinct on the lower face, neck, and shoulders, but was also visible on the arms.”

Is this conclusive? No, not necessarily, and to date there has been no modern analysis of Ramses V that could definitively determine if his condition was, in fact, smallpox. But the circumstantial evidence seems strong.

Smallpox is one of history’s greatest killers, responsible for 300 to 500 million deaths in the 20th century.

6. Rabies

Rabies is ingenious: Not only does it infect a host, but it also hijacks the host’s brain in a way that makes the host want to bite things. This is how rabies gets a ticket to ride. And it’s been doing it since at least 2300 B.C.E., when it was described in the Eshuma Code of Babylon.

The first person known to have survived rabies without a vaccination is Jeanna Giese, a Wisconsin teen who was bitten in 2004 by a rabid bat while at church. The New York Times reports that Jeanna went a month between bite and treatment, and was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of full-blown rabies. Doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin initiated a cocktail of coma-inducing and antiviral drugs, though Giese’s family credits prayer with saving the girl’s life.

5. Malaria

Symptoms_of_MalariaOriginal Title: A.funestus_1.50sRGB

The Romans offered the first cure for malaria: an amulet worn around the neck, inscribed with the powerful incantation “abracadabra”. Over the years, we’ve attempted various other cures: adding oil to stagnant puddles to smother mosquito larvae, using pesticides, vaccines and nets, and even leveraging high-tech solutions such as a laser that shoots mosquitoes in midair. But the disease continues to infect 300 million people every year, killing 1 million of them.

The Wall Street Journal reports that malaria is responsible for half of all human deaths since the Stone Age.

Granted, that statistic extends the origin of the disease back in time past its first definite mention, which was in the Chinese “Nei Ching (“The Canon of Medicine”), around the year 2700 B.C.E.

4. Pneumonia

People breathe more than 11,000 liters (3,000 gallons) of air every day. And so, as you would expect, the lungs are a favorite home of bacteria, viruses, fungi and even parasites. And when anything foreign colonizes the lungs, the most common result is fluid. The umbrella term we use to describe fluid in the lungs is pneumonia.

Hippocrates wrote that fluid in the lungs should be called pneumonia if, “the fever be acute, and if there be pains on either side, or in both, and if expiration be if cough be present, and the sputa expectorated be of a blond or livid color”. But he also distinctly calls it a “disease of the ancients.”

Where exactly does pneumonia place in this list of oldest known diseases? Because it’s a soft tissue disease, the archaeological record isn’t strong. But it’s likely that various forms of pneumonia have been around as long as our lungs.

3. Tuberculosis

In 2008, a team of scientists from University College London excavated the submerged ancient city of Alit-Yam, off the coast of Israel. There, they found the buried remains of a mother and her child. Both skeletons showed bone lesions characteristic of tuberculosis. DNA testing confirmed it: Tuberculosis is at least 9,000 years old.

Interestingly, this dig also lent evidence to an ongoing chicken-or-the-egg debate of whether we got TB from cows or they got it from us. In Alit-Yam, human skeletons showed signs of TB, while DNA from animal skeletons didn’t. So it seems cows are not the killers we once thought.

Other historical speculation has proved equally false: Neither the fossil nor DNA records support the cause of TB as nightly revelry with fairies and the resulting lack of rest, nor is the disease the result of witches who transform the victim into a horse and then ride the victim to nightly meetings, as were once thought.

While the Alit-Yam finding is the oldest confirmed case of TB, characteristic lesions have been found on bones found in Turkey, dated about 500,000 years ago.

2. Trachoma

Trachoma is a chronic infection of the upper eyelid that eventually results in the eyelid constricting and turning the eyelashes in toward the cornea. Over time, the rubbing of the constricted eyelid and especially the eyelash makes the patient go blind. This is what happened to Aetius, Paulus Aeginetus, Alexander, Trailaus, Horace and Cicero. And trachoma is described in Hippocrates and in the Egyptian Ebers papyrus.

But researchers make a compelling case for earlier trachoma found in a corner of the world little associated with early diseases: Australia. Aboriginal skeletons from 8000 B.C.E. show a common skull lesion around the eyes. Scientists determined that these lesions were due to bone infection that had come from soft tissue infection. Though there are a few eye diseases that could fit this bill, the skeletons were found in the Australian region in which trachoma is most common today.

1. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Mitochondria are small organelles found in nearly every cell in the human body. And they perform a function essential to human life, converting glucose from food to energy called adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, which cells can use.

But mitochondria carry their own genetic material — separate from human DNA — and these genes look a lot like those of bacteria. In other words, it’s very likely that the mitochondria that we depend on for survival are the products of an ancient infection.

Whatever the infection, it predates animal life, let alone humans. So there’s no use exploring the fossil record. Instead, researchers compared the genes of mitochondria to those of existing bacteria. The closest match was to bacteria of order Rickettsiales, many of which cause diseases — including Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Chinese Woman Gives Birth To A Baby With A 3 Inch Tail

In 2013 a baby boy was born with a bizarre long tail hanging out of his lower back, and the weirdest thing is that it is still growing. As spooky and strange as that may sound, it is a real case and we’ve got the story right here. Have a look for yourself at the 2013 Chinese baby with a tail.

Xiao Wei is the name of the poor baby who was unlucky enough to be born with an odd tail sticking out of his lower back. What’s even worse is the fact that the tail is posing a threat to his life due to the fact that it is still growing.

The fact that the spinal cord is out in the baby’s tail only makes things worse for the doctors, who declared that they can not simply cut off the tail and make the baby look normal. Surgeon Huang Chanping declared that the growth is highly developed and now measures approximately 10 centimeters.

So hopefully, the good doctors will be able to cure the baby from this Myelomeningocele, which is one of the most common type of spina bifida, with an occurrence rate of 1 in 800 babies born.

The Performance Artist Who Nailed His Own Testicles to Red Square (Russia)

pyotr TURS99z

In November 2013, Pyotr Pavlensky, a 29-year-old Russian performance artist, nailed his testicles to a Red Square cobblestone outside Lenin’s Mausoleum in Moscow in protest against the Kremlin’s crackdown on political rights.

Following the incident, Pavlensky received treatment at a clinic before being taken to a police station.

It’s not the first time that Pavlensky has resorted to dramatic methods of protest. He has previously sewn his lips together to demonstrate against the jailing of two female members of the Pussy Riot punk band who staged an anti-Kremlin performance inside Moscow’s main cathedral in 2011. He was also arrested after wrapping his naked body in barbed wire outside a Saint Petersburg government building.

The Single Man Who Cut Off His Own Penis Because It’s of No Use to Him (China)

In October 2013, Yang Hu, a 26-year-old single Chinese man decided to cut off his member as there was no use for it.

Mr. Hu (not pictured) had been increasingly depressed about the fact that, since moving to the city, he could not find a girlfriend. What was worse was that he was working such long hours in a clothing factory in Jiaxing, in east China, that he doubted he would ever have a chance to meet a woman.

His depression grew so bad that he decided to cut off his member as “there was no use for it anyway,” believing that it would stop him from thinking about getting a girlfriend. However, after suffering in agony he made the decision to cycle to a hospital for treatment.

When he arrived doctors told him that they couldn’t help save his manhood and ordered him to cycle back home to get the penis before he could be treated.

Unfortunately, when Mr. Hu eventually arrived back at the hospital with the severed member, doctors told him that it had been without blood for too long, so it was impossible to reattach it.

The big question is why doctors didn’t provide the man with an ambulance. That way he might have managed to get home quicker and his private parts could have been saved.

The Man Who Ripped Off His Own Penis After Taking Hallucinogenic Mushrooms (USA)

In June 2013, a 41-year-old Columbus, Ohio native, whose name has not been reported, ripped off his own penis during a drug-fueled high after taking magic mushrooms.

According to police, the man was completely stoned when he was found naked, covered in blood, and screaming outside of Ypsilanti Middle School in Michigan, and parts of his genitals lay on the ground beside him. Everything indicated that the man had mutilated his penis with his bare hands.

Apparently, the man broke a window at the school, which set off the alarm, and police were alerted.

Immediately, officers subdued the man and took him to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He later reportedly told investigators that he was in the Ypsilanti area visiting friends and had taken hallucinogenic mushrooms, but he didn’t remember much after that.

Despite having been bombastic news, nothing more was heard about this man or his medical treatment.

The Portuguese Model Who Removed His Lover’s Testicles with a Corkscrew (USA)

In January 2012, Renato Seabra, a 23-year-old former Portuguese model, bludgeoned his 65-year-old lover Carlos Castro to death and then removed his testicles with a corkscrew in a New York hotel room.

Mr. Castro, a well-known TV personality and writer in Portugal, ended their affair and would no longer pay for Seabra’s high-flying lifestyle. So, in a fit of rage, the former model stomped his lover’s face, stabbed him in the face and groin with a corkscrew, and rammed a computer monitor onto his head. Seabra then castrated Mr. Castro with a corkscrew and placed the testicles on his own wrists. He showered, put on clean clothes, took $1,600 from Mr. Castro’s wallet, and placed a “do not disturb” sign on the room’s door before checking himself into the hospital. The day after the murder, Seabra confessed to the crime in the hospital.

According to Seabra’s lawyers, his client killed Mr. Castro due to a few delusions that had led the former model to believe that he was on a mission from God to rid Mr. Castro of homosexuality.

In December 2012, the former model was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

The Drunk Man Who Tried to Rape a Raccoon and had His Penis Bitten Off (Russia)

In January 2009, Alexander Kirilov, a 44-year-old Russian man, was on a drunken weekend with pals when he tried to rape a raccoon while his buddies watched. You might be able to guess what happened next. The animal was frightened and tried to defend itself by taking a big bite out of Kirilov’s penis.

Kirilov was taken to a hospital in Moscow, where plastic surgeons tried unsuccessfully to restore his mangled manhood.

The Former Politician Whose Penis was Amputated After an Overdose of Viagra (Colombia)

How-to-Use-Viagra-Or-Generic-viagra amputation

In September 2013, Gentil Ramírez Polanía, a 66-year-old former local politician from Colombia, had to have his penis amputated after he allegedly overdosed on Viagra to impress his girlfriend.

After an erection that lasted for several days, his penis started to develop signs of gangrene and he was forced to go to the hospital due to the pain.

When he sought medical help, doctors informed him that his only option was amputation so the inflammation and gangrene would stop spreading to other parts of his body.

The Peruvian Man Who Lost His Penis Due to a Penile Implant Gone Wrong (USA)

In 2007, Enrique Milla, a 65-year-old Peruvian man, lost his penis after a post-surgical infection that resulted in the amputation of his organ.

Mr. Milla elected to have penile implant surgery because he suffered from erectile dysfunction, but doctors erred in letting Milla have the surgery because the patient suffered from high blood pressure and extreme diabetes, factors that would make him a poor candidate for the procedure.

Two weeks after the operation, Mr. Milla developed an infection that eventually turned to gangrene. Amputation of his penis was necessary to save his life.

The Doctors’ attorney blamed Milla for not taking care of himself properly after the procedure. The attorney said that Milla may have contracted the infection by engaging in post-surgical sex, resulting in an infection.

The Woman Who Chopped Off Part of Her Former Lover’s Penis to Prevent Him from Targeting Other Women (Australia)

In February 2011, Jian Chen, a 48-year-old Chinese woman who was living in Australia, chopped off her ex-partner’s penis and fatally stabbed him in the neck to prevent him from targeting other women.

Chen added sleeping tablets to her former partner’s dinner and waited for him to fall asleep before tying his hands and feet and cutting off his penis.

The Courier Mail reports that the man died in Royal North Shore Hospital from his injuries, including stab wounds to his jaw and leg.

According to the information, 48-year-old Xian Peng returned to Australia from China for a visit and was at the home of his former partner Jian Chen.

In August 2012, Chen was sentenced to a minimum of three years and nine months in jail after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

According to Chen’s statement, she was suffering from a “substantial impairment of the mind” due to mental illness. Chen also believed that her husband wanted to impregnate wealthy women to get money off them, so she decided to destroy “his weapon” to keep him from harming any more women and future children.

Pig Man of Gautemala

In  2012, residents of the Guatemalan village  decided that a pig’s odd human-shaped head was the work of extraterrestrials, after strange bright lights were spotted hovering in the sky on the night of its birth. The poor pig, which was one of a litter of 11, as described as looking like a cross between a human and something from science fiction movies. Farmer Laureano Escobar Arias said: ‘I was shocked – it was a really terrifying experience.

‘It looked like some kind of alien creature.’

However, local health officials have suggested that there are more earthly reasons for the pig’s appearance.

‘We don’t know for certain but it could have been caused by a genetic problem or by environmental pollution,’ one commented.

The news of a “half sheep, half human” creature born to an adult sheep in the town of Sokoto, Nigeria quickly spread across the world. The locals claimed witchcraft, Dr. Dahiru Sani who was one of the surgeons that carried out the operation on the controversial sheep said infections such as German measles, excess drugs and radiation could cause such abnormalities in animal pregnancy.

Half-human half-goat

According to the Daily Post in Nigeria, in September, 2012 a general hospital located in Jahun, Jigawa state became a theater of absurd and bizarre when a woman who had labored for 9 months gave birth to what looks like a combination of human head and goat legs. Half-man, half-goat discovered in Zimbabwe

The Daily Telegraph on September 28, 2009 reported a goat, which died just a few hours after birth in Lower Gweru, Zimbabwe, had a huge head and face which resembled a human as well as goat legs and a tail. The Zimbabwe Guardian reported that Midlands Governor and Resident Minister Jason Machaya maintained the creature was the result of a coupling between man and goat. “This incident is very shocking. It is my first time to see such an evil thing. It is really embarrassing,” Machaya  said.   ”The head belongs to a man while the body is that of a goat. This is evident that an adult human being was responsible. Evil powers caused this person to lose self control

Montauk Monster

The “Montauk Monster” was found in the area  of Montauk , Long Island, a coastal New York, town in 2008.  It had a hairless body like a doga dog but a beak and teeth that were very strange.

Some say the  ”Montauk Monster” was raccoon carcass that washed ashore dead.  The identity of the creature, and the veracity of stories surrounding it, has been the subject of controversy and speculation. It is unknown what happened to the carcass. William Wise, director of Stony Brook University’s Living Marine Resources Institute, interpreted the photo along with a colleague; they deemed the creature a fake, most likely the result of “someone who got very creative with latex”, although his “next-best guess” was that the creature could be a diseased dog or coyote which had “been in the sea for a while”. Wise discounted the following general possibilities:

Raccoon – the legs appear to be too long in proportion to the body.

Sea turtle – sea turtles do not have teeth, and the body cannot be removed from the shell without doing damage to muscle and skin tissue and the spine.

Rodent – rodents have two huge, curved incisor teeth in front of their mouths.

Dog or other canine such as a coyote – the prominent eye ridge does not match the creature’s feet.

Sheep or other ovine – sheep have two-toed hooves, not multi-toed paws.

Plum island is an animal disease center just outside Long island wich is one of the most dangerous bio-labs in the U.S. They are performing studies and tests on bio-warfare and exotic diseases of animals .  Some maintain the creature was an experiement from that lab.

Monster face otter

A bizarre creature with a long hairy body with bald skin on its head, feet and face showed up in a small Canadian town, according to media reports. It was discovered by two nurses in the town of Kitchenuhmaykoosib in Ontario, Canada, while they were out on a walk with their dog.

The two took some photographs of the dead animal pulled out by their dog from a lake, then they left it alone. When locals went back to retrieve the body, it was gone. It has dark brown fur, head , face, smooth legs , no feathers . The face was like a boar with the nose of a big dog.

“The Parks Dept. was probably very quick to identify it as a pig and dispose of it, but it is most certainly NOT a pig,” Denise Ginley stressed to the Daily News. “The most obvious sign being the lack of a cloven hoof, instead this creature has five digits all close together.”

Russian Trench Creature.

In 2009 these weird creatures were found in an abandoned foundation pit in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. Some maintain they were horseshoe crabs.

The creature had more than 20 little legs.

Criadillas are bull testicles. As everyone knows, from the dawn of times eating manly parts of a slain animal was considered a source of virility. Still consuming such a dish takes a bit of the chart to taste for adventure. It is said they are very tasty but I guess it takes a lot of courage to take on the trial of trying them.

Silk Worms

silk worms

Typical Asian dish, Korean to be more specific, this food became popular all over the US and also in the great cities of Europe where the Korean restaurants became popular.

Initially containing rotted baby worms not reaching maturity, the recipe became more elaborate and started using mainly male worms “harvested” after dieing posterior the female fertilization. The worms are rolled through flour and bread crumbs and fried in palm oil and after that served with a sweet-sour sauce.

Donkey Penis

The latest trend in Chinese kitchen where anything eatable becomes fair game; this dish is something out of a horror movie. Setting apart the disgusting idea and considering only the presentation of this “phallic gourmet” dish, one’s stomach may turn upside down at the sight of something purple hanging in a Chinese meat store or presented on a lettuce platter at dinner.

Snake Blood

Scorpion Soup

Cooking Insects Scorpionsoup

Scorpion soup – as its name implies, is a soup made from scorpions. Preparing and eating scorpion soup can be a dangerous task as Wing Li from China recently discovered when he was stung by three as he tried to throw them in the pot. He was making the soup to help ease his rheumatism. Scorpions are eaten in the south of China. They are reared in ‘ranches’, mostly in people’s homes, then sold in the markets. Scorpions have a woody taste and should be eaten whole, except for the tip of the tail – though some recipes suggest that the venom in the tail is rendered harmless by cooking.

Raw Blood Soup

Raw blood soup (ti?t canh in Vietnamese) is a dish made with raw blood of ducks or geese (sometimes pigs), with peanuts and herbs on top. This is the typical protein-rich breakfast of the country people in Northern Vietnam, but is very dangerous because of the H5N1 bird flu virus. This is made by taking fresh blood and sticking it in the fridge to gently congeal. Raw blood soup is a Vietnamese dish which is usually consumed while drinking alcohol and it is one that makes very little effort appeal to the taste buds of the non-Vietnamese diner. Usually you will find a few chopped peanuts scattered on top of your blood but that’s as far as it goes for fanciness. Blood soup has the oddest texture and tastes strangely metallic.

Human Placenta

350Px-Human Placenta Baby Side

Those who advocate placentophagy in humans, mostly in modern America and Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, China, and the Pacific Islands, believe that eating the placenta prevents postpartum depression and other pregnancy complications. A variety of recipes are known to exist for preparing placenta for eating in spite of the extended taboo against eating human body parts. Because a placenta is a temporary organ, it is considered by some to be excluded from the classification needed for cannibalism. Here is just one recipe I found on the Internet for placenta – it is a placenta cocktail: 1/4 cup raw placenta, 8oz V-8 juice, 2 ice cubes, 1/2 cup carrot. Blend at high speed for 10 seconds and drink. Or not.

Century Egg

Century Egg Sliced Open

Century egg is a Chinese cuisine ingredient made by preserving duck, chicken or quail eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, lime, and rice straw for several weeks to several months, depending on the method of processing. After the process is completed, the yolk becomes a dark green, cream-like substance with a strong odor of sulphur and ammonia (AKA farts or rotten egg), while the white becomes a dark brown, transparent jelly with little flavor or taste. Century eggs can be eaten without further preparation, on their own as a side dish or chopped and used as an ingredient.

9/11 Attacks

Probably the worst attack in our history that shook the world and awakened everyone to the true reach of terrorists. Circa 11 September, 2001, Al-Qaeda were waging a war against the whole world, and this time around, they wanted to make a statement that would resonate amongst every human soul alive. They achieved this by hijacking four commercial flights and crashed two of them straight into the World Trade Centre, the two colossal towers in New York. The other two flights were directed to the Pentagon and the Capitol building, albeit the latter was never hit as the passangers of the plane tried to over-power the terrorists and crashed in Pennsylvania.
Nearly 3000 people died. None survived. This was a wake-up call for the world, and the world rightfully waged a war against terrorism.

The Oklahoma City Bombing

America received it’s first blow of terrorism in Oklahoma, when members of the militia movement attacked the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. The blast claimed lives of 168 civilians and did a total damage of $652 million.
This was the worst terrorist attack America had seen in it’s history, till 9/11 occurred.

India saw one of the worst terrorist attacks on Novermber 26, 2008, when a group of Pakistani Islamist terrorists launched a series of well-planned attacks all across Mumbai. They initiated it by opening fire at some of the busiest public places, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Leopold Cafe, and Cama Hospital. The ordeal lasted for four days killing 164 people and wounding at least 308. One terrorist was caught alive and imprisoned for further investigation.

The Beslan Massacre

The Beslan School Hostage Crisis of September,2004 is one of the most horrifying incidents to take place in the European continent. The Massacre took place in Beslan, Russia, when a group of Separatist militants took more than 1,100 people hostage in a school, including 777 school children. The fight between the militants and the forces lasted for three days and ended in the death of 334 hostages and injuring many more.
This brought about a drastic change in the Russian law enforcement agencies and anti-terrorist protection.

The Bentalha Massacre

The Bentalha Massacre took place in Algeria on September 22-23, 1997, where more than 200 villagers were mutilated by armed guirrellas. The Bentalha Massacre was amongst several others that occured in 1997 all across Algeria, killing thousands, and injuring many more.
The killings occured as a sign of revolt against the civil conflicts over elections and was carried by the Armed Islamic Group.

As a reader, do you think terrorist attacks will ever stop in this world?

What is Exorcism?

Exorcism is the practice of evicting demons or other spiritual entities from a person or an area they are believed to have possessed.

1. Clara Germana Cele

Clara Germana Cele

In 1906, Clara Germana Cele was a Christian student at St. Michael’s Mission in Natal, South Africa. For some reason, Cele prayed and made a pact with Satan when she was sixteen years-old, and just days later, Cele was overtaken by strange impulses. She was repulsed by religious artifacts like crucifixes, she could speak and understand several languages of which she had no previous knowledge, and she became clairvoyant regardingthe thoughts and histories of the people around her.

Nuns who attended to Cele reported that she produced horrible, animalistic sounds; she also levitated up to five feet in the air. Eventually, two priests were brought in to perform an exorcism. Cele tried to strangle one of the priests with his stole, and over one hundred and seventy people witnessed her levitating as the priests read Scripture. Over the course of two days, the rites of exorcism successfully drove the dark spirits from her body.

2. Anneliese Michel

Anneliese Michel

Anneliese Michel is a controversial case, as well as the subject of many fictional accounts of her tragic story, most notably the 2005 courtroom drama The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Sixteen year-old Anneliese Michel had a history of epilepsy and mental illness, for which she had often been treated at a psychiatric hospital. However, in 1973 Michel become suicidal, spurned all religious artifacts, drank her own urine, and began to hear voices. Medicine did nothing to help the girl, who begged her family to bring in a priest because she believed that she was possessed by demons. Though her request was rejected, two local priests secretly began treating her with exorcism rites. Meanwhile, her parents stopped treating her epilepsy and mental disorders. She was dead within a year.

Michel had almost seventy exorcisms performed on her over the course of ten months. She refused to eat, and often talked of dying as a martyr. Many of the attempted exorcisms were recorded:

Anneliese Michel died from emaciation and starvation. Consequently, her parents and the priests responsible were charged with negligent homicide.

3. “Roland Doe”/”Robbie Mannheim”

'Roland Doe'/'Robbie Mannheim'

Known as the “real” story behind the novel and Hollywood movie The Exorcist, the tale of fourteen year-old Roland Doe is one of the most notorious stories of demonic possession. In fact, Roland Doe is not his real name; it is a pseudonym assigned to him by the Catholic church in order to preserve the boy’s privacy. In the late 1940s, Doe’s aunt encouraged him to use a Ouija board, and many speculate that after her death the boy attempted to contact his aunt with the Ouija board, an act which opened the door for the demons who wished to possess him.

The possession started with strange sounds, like dripping water, that no one could place. Eventually, religious artifacts began to quake and fly off the walls, and unexplained footsteps and scratching noises could be heard around the home. Scratches began to appear on the boy’s body, including words that seemed to have been carved into his flesh by unseen claws. The boy spoke in tongues in a guttural voice and levitated in the air, with his body contorted in pain.

His family brought in a Catholic priest, who determined that the boy was possessed by evil spirits and needed an exorcism. The exorcism ritual was performed over thirty times, with the boy injuring the priest many times throughout. When, at last, the rite was successful, the entire hospital heard Doe’s cries of bestial anguish and reported a horrible sulfuric odor hanging in the air.

4. “Julia”

In 2008, Dr. Richard E. Gallagher, a board-certified psychiatrist and associate professor of clinical psychiatry at New York Medical College, documented the case of a patient nicknamed “Julia” whom he deduced was indeed possessed by demons. It’s rare that a scientist and psychiatrist would acknowledge the possibility of possession; typically doctors think that possession is either fraudulent or a result of mental illness.

Dr. Gallagher personally observed items flying around the room, Julia levitating off the bed, speaking in tongues, and knowing things about people around her that she could not possibly have known. Here is an excerpt from Gallagher’s statement:

“Periodically, in our presence, Julia would go into a trance state of a recurring nature,” writes Gallagher. “Mentally troubled individuals often ‘dissociate,’ but Julia’s trances were accompanied by an unusual phenomenon: Out of her mouth would come various threats, taunts and scatological language, phrases like ‘Leave her alone, you idiot,’ ‘She’s ours,’ ‘Leave, you imbecile priest,’ or just ‘Leave.’ The tone of this voice differed markedly from Julia’s own, and it varied, sometimes sounding guttural and vaguely masculine, at other points high pitched. Most of her comments during these ‘trances,’ or at the subsequent exorcisms, displayed a marked contempt for anything religious or sacred.”

5. Arne Cheyenne Johnson

Arne Cheyenne Johnson

Known as the “Demon Murder Trial,” the case of Arne Cheyenne Johnson is the first known court case in the United States during which the defense attempted to prove that the defendant was not guilty by reason of possession.

In 1981, Arne Cheyenne Johnson murdered his landlord, Alan Bono, in Connecticut. Johnson’s attorneys argued that his actions indicated a pattern of erratic behavior that had begun when Johnson was just a child. Johnson’s family had even consulted with “demonologists” Ed and Lorraine Warren, saying that the child had been taunted and harassed by unknown entities for most of his life. They also asserted that his evil-doings resulted not from a psychological disorder, but from demonic possession.

Ultimately, the judge ruled that demonic possession was not a valid defense against first-degree murder. Johnson was convicted and served a mere five years of his ten to twenty year sentence.

6. David Berkowitz, AKA “Son of Sam”

David Berkowitz, AKA 'Son of Sam'

In 1976, the people of New York City were terrorized by a serial killer known as the “Son of Sam,” or the “.44 Caliber Killer.” For more than a year, the killer lead police on a wild goose chase, leaving behind taunting notes at the crime scenes. Six people were killed and seven others severely wounded in the “Summer of Sam.”

When the killer was finally apprehended, he was identified as David Berkowitz. Berkowitz confessed to all of the shootings and claimed that he was commanded to kill by a demon. Berkowitz did not claim to be possessed himself, however; he claimed that his neighbor’s dog was possessed, and the dog had ordered him to perform the killings. Berkowitz was sentenced to six life sentences, and in the mid-1990s he issued an amendment to his confession, claiming that he had indeed been a member of a Satanic cult that had orchestrated the incidents as part of a ritual murder.

7.Michael Taylor

Michael Taylor

Michael Taylor and his wife, Christine, lived in a small town in Great Britain called Ossett. The couple was very religious, and had joined a Christian prayer group lead by Marie Robinson. At one meeting in 1974, Christine Taylor accused her husband and Robinson of having an affair, which both people hotly denied. Michael Taylor then spewed obscenities and began acting extremely erratic and out of character, leading witnesses to think that he seemed possessed by evil.

After months of crazy behavior, Taylor eventually consulted with clergy who performed an exorcism. The exorcism lasted for well over twenty-four hours, and the priests involved claimed to have removed forty demons from the man’s body. However, before he left, the priests warned him that the demon of murder remained dormant in his soul.

As soon as Taylor arrived home, he brutally murdered his wife and their dog. He was later found wandering the streets, covered in blood. At his trial, he was acquitted by reason of insanity.

8. George Lukins

George Lukins

In 1778, English tailor George Lukins claimed to be possessed. The man would often sing in a voice and language that was not his own, and finally neighbors, concerned by his increasingly frightening behavior, reached out to the church to help the man.

Lukins was sent to a hospital for over twenty months, but doctors could not help him. His caregivers discharged him, even more convinced that his affliction was demonic in nature. During his possession, a very violent Lukins reportedly claimed that he was the devil, barked like a dog, and sang hymns backward. In 1778, after Lukins claimed to be possessed by seven demons that could only be driven out by seven clergymen, the church got involved. Seven priests assembled at Temple Church, where they performed an exorcism. When the ceremony was over, priests claimed that the man had been delivered from the demons who possessed him, and George Lukins exclaimed, “Blessed Jesus!” Lukins then praised God, recited the Lord’s prayer, and thanked the priests.

9. Anna Ecklund: The Earling Possession

Anna Ecklund: The Earling Possession

By the time she was just fourteen years-old, a girl from Earling, Iowa named Anna Ecklund began showing signs of demonic possession. The girl had been raised a devout Catholic, however her father and aunt, who practiced witchcraft, allegedly cursed the girl routinely and used herbs to taint her food. Soon, she could not tolerate religious artifacts, became sexually depraved, and could not enter a church. In 1912, the girl underwent a successful exorcism, but after being “cured” of her possession, her father and aunt prayed to Satan for her to suffer even more, and within a year the girl had become possessed by multiple entities, many of whom are said to be the same spirits who possessed Annaliese Michel.

In 1928, Ecklund again sought help from the church. She was placed in a convent where her exorcism would take place, and the girl’s behavior worsened while in the care of the nuns. When the nuns would bless her food before entering her room, Ecklund could sense the blessing. She would hiss at the nuns and throw the food on the floor. She would tolerate food that had not been blessed. Witnesses testified to seeing the girl speak and understand foreign languages she’d never heard before. They also claimed that she defied gravity by levitating and clinging to the wall. The girl was clairvoyant and often vomited and spit at the priests. Her eyes bulged and her body was so bloated and heavy that she nearly broke the iron bed on which she lay.

After twenty-three days and three complete exorcism rituals, the clergymen finally declared her free from the demons who had possessed her.

10. Pope Francis Exorcises Boy

Pope Francis Exorcises Boy

The Catholic church performs thousands of exorcisms each year, and Pope Francis has said that he believes that Satan is real, and that the battle against evil is one that he must fight every day. In May of 2013, the newly-elected Pope allegedly performed a brief exorcism live on camera. As he was moving down the line of disabled people, offering blessings, the Pontiff paused before a boy in a wheelchair. Grasping the boy by the head, the boy shuddered and gasped before going limp.

. Katherine Knight Cooked Her Husband and Tried to Feed Him to His Children

Katherine Knight had a well-documented history of clownfuck lunacy, beginning when she tried to strangle her first husband to death on their wedding night for daring to only have sex with her three times before falling asleep. When he finally left her, Knight took their infant daughter and dropped her on a stretch of nearby train tracks (the baby was rescued by a hobo), then rampaged through town threatening random strangers with an ax.

She later went on another rampage, slashing a woman’s face and forcing her to drive to a service station, where Knight took a little boy hostage until the police arrived and beat her into submission with brooms, because law enforcement in Australia is apparently hilarious. None of this is the crazy part of her story. WARNING: READ AT YOUR DISCRETION — HERE IS WHERE THIS ARTICLE TAKES A DETOUR STRAIGHT INTO HELL.

Knight eventually met a father of three named John Price and they moved in together, despite the fact that Price was well aware of her explosive fits of inexplicable slobbering Looney Tunes rage. Price wound up kicking her out and filed a restraining order against her, telling his co-workers that if he ever failed to show up for work, she had probably killed him. He then gallantly allowed Knight back into his house for sex and fell asleep beside her, which suggests that Price perhaps didn’t completely understand how restraining orders are supposed to work. Knight underscored this error by stabbing Price 37 times. When Price didn’t show up for work the next day, his co-workers called the police, who showed up at Price’s house to discover his skinned, headless body lying on the living room floor.

Knight had draped his skin, completely intact in a single piece, over an S hook in a doorway like a vanity curtain in Leatherface’s house. Price’s head was boiling in a pot on the stove, and pieces of his butt had been pan-fried with vegetables and gravy and plated up on the table in two place settings with name tags indicating that they were meant for Price’s adult children (although the kids weren’t expected, so she probably should have covered the plates with tinfoil).

Knight pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole — her file literally bears the words “NEVER TO BE RELEASED,” like a fucking supervillain in a subterranean vault.

. A Millionaire Pig Farmer Killed People and Fed Them to His Pigs

Robert Pickton, a millionaire pig farmer in British Columbia, murdered anywhere between six and 50 prostitutes from the Vancouver area, cut up their bodies, and fed them to his pigs … and once again, that statement is actually the least insane part of his story.

Pickton would cruise around the seediest areas of Vancouver, luring hookers back to his sprawling pig farm (any invitation that includes the phrase “Come back to my pig farm, where I butcher pigs” should be immediately refused) with the promise of money and drugs, where he brutally murdered them and dismembered their bodies for creative disposal.

Pickton didn’t just feed the bodies to his pigs, though. He kept the head, hands, and feet of some of his victims bundled up in refrigerators around the farm. He mulched some of his victims in a wood chipper. And investigators are almost 100 percent certain that he lumped human remains together with unusable pig parts (like intestines, blood, and bones) and took them all up to a rendering plant in Vancouver to be processed into things like lipstick, shampoo, and soap, which reveals two horrible truths about the cosmetics industry.

. The Giggling Granny Poisoned Her Entire Family Man

The Sunday Times/Baris Simsek/iStock/Getty Images

Nannie Doss had a thing for arsenic, and with it she poisoned the tittyshits out of virtually every member of her family before delivering an affable, chuckling confession to police, earning her the nickname “The Giggling Granny.” By the time she was finally caught, she’d killed her mother, two sisters, two daughters, a nephew, a grandson, and four husbands, for motives best described as “no goddamned reason whatsoever.”

And what is really chilling about this story is how long her murder spree continued before anybody caught on, although her first husband, Charley, did grow suspicious after their two middle daughters mysteriously died of “food poisoning,” because it literally used to be that easy to murder people. Charley ran off, taking their eldest daughter with him but leaving the youngest behind with Doss, because apparently he didn’t like that child.

Nannie Doss stayed married to her second husband, Frank, for 16 years, during which time she probably killed her newborn grandson by stabbing him through the skull with a hatpin and definitely killed her older grandson with a generous dose of poison. Frank, for his part, was an abusive drunk, and Doss eventually got sick of him and dumped rat poison into his whiskey, which is a recognized but generally frowned upon cure for assholes.

Doss got married three more times, and each husband wound up dying mysteriously. She even killed her third husband’s mother, just after poisoning him and burning their house to the ground to keep it from going to his family. In between her fourth and fifth marriages, she moved in with her cancer-stricken sister and poisoned her, too, because why the hell not? “Might as well kill my own mother while I’m at it,” she presumably thought, before doing exactly that. At this point, the authorities must have assumed that Nannie Doss was shrouded in some ancient mummy curse, because the only other explanation is that they were all terrible at their jobs.

Doss finally got caught when she poisoned her fifth husband badly enough to send him to the hospital for three weeks, but not enough to kill him. The day he was sent home, Doss filled him with enough arsenic to kill 20 freaking people. Finally, one of the doctors became suspicious of Doss and ordered an autopsy, which confirmed that her husband had been poisoned.

Police confronted Doss, and she immediately confessed, laughing throughout the entire interview while gleefully admitting to murdering 11 members of her family. Doss kept right on smiling as she boarded the bus to prison to serve out her life sentence, commenting to a reporter as she left that she didn’t feel bad at all about the outcome. Life magazine even asked her permission to publish her life story, because they apparently forgot that she had murdered children in addition to her drunken asslord husbands.

. Adolfo de Jesus Constanzo Murdered People for Black Magic

Adolfo de Jesus Constanzo was a former apprentice to a Haitian priest who blossomed into a master-level Crazy Mage armed with the legitimate belief that he had the power to see the future and cast powerful spells, provided he kept his black magic cauldron well-stocked with sacrificial human body parts. He had a cult of devoted followers to fulfill this task for him by kidnapping (mostly) random people and torturing them to death to appease Kadiempembe, a devil-like figure and the bestower of his magical gifts. We assume this same demon was responsible for granting him the handsomest Emilio Estevez mullet in recorded history.

Yeah, that’s not how you were picturing him, was it?

Constanzo was a warlock for hire, selling his spells and clairvoyance abilities to drug dealers and law enforcement officials alike in Mexico. He stewed human brains, blood, bones, and guts in his cauldron alongside scorpions, spiders, and other witchcrafty totems to create spells to make his clients invisible to police detection and invulnerable to gunfire.

Even the drug dealers were afraid of Constanzo — when one cartel refused to make him a full partner after they’d enjoyed so much success with his spells, seven of their members mysteriously disappeared, turning up several days later floating in a river with fingers, ears, hearts, brains, and freaking spines removed, like they’d been attacked by the goddamned Predator. Constanzo had a handful of other rival drug traffickers fed to his cauldron and even had a member of his own cult hacked into dark wizard porridge to set an example for the rest of the team (the example being “We should probably find other jobs”).

The heat didn’t really come down on Constanzo until his group kidnapped and mutilated an American college student, at which point the U.S. government put intense pressure on Mexican officials to solve the crime. Police followed a member of Constanzo’s cult to his terrifying ritualistic murder ranch after the man blew through a checkpoint, and they found remains of 15 people buried along the property. The missing student’s brain was discovered floating in a potion in Constanzo’s cauldron, presumably waiting to be graded by Professor Snape.

Constanzo’s gang was hunted down and arrested, and Constanzo himself was finally cornered in an apartment surrounded by 180 police officers, because magic probably isn’t real, but we aren’t taking any fucking chances. Rather than allow himself to be captured, Constanzo instructed one of his henchmen to shoot him. The police discovered the evil wizard’s body riddled with bullets, because apparently that henchman wasn’t taking any chances either.

. Man Attacked, Beheaded, Eaten on Public Bus

Vince Weiguang Li proves that not all Canadians are amazingly nice human beings who enjoy poutine and maple syrup. Some of them are complete monsters. And their buses aren’t as safe as they seem when you’re there.

On a Greyhound bus, the new Canadian citizen who immigrated from China completely snapped and caused one of the most horrific scenes I’ve ever heard of (that actually happened) with a twist (wait for the end).

While sitting next to passenger Tim McLean (who was sleeping), Li produced a huge knife and began to stab him repeatedly in the neck and chest until McLean was completely decapitated which shows just how badly some people hate sitting next to a snorer.

Li walked around showing the severed head to the rest of the passengers as they screamed and ran out of the bus in fear of being brutally dismembered as well. Li never left the bus, but stayed back and continued dismembering the man and consumed McLean’s flesh, all while carrying around the severed head.

He’s currently at a maximum security mental facility.

. Deformed Man Kills Young Girls, Drinks Blood, Sent Bone Powder to Families

In what is one of the most heartless, horrible crimes ever to have been performed, Tsutomu Miyazaki, known as “The Otaku Murderer” (Otaku meaning a love of anime and general Japanese culture, but in this case just someone obsessed with young girls) or “The Little Girl Murderer” or “Dracula”, killed four little girls between the ages of 4 and 7.He drank their blood and had sex with their dead bodies. The man’s premature birth left him with deformed hands, which were fused directly to his wrists, this supposedly led him to live in ai world of fantasy and comic books, which somehow then led to him turning to child pornography for thrills.

Much like Albert Fish, he would send letters to his victims families often detailing exactly what he did to them and often included the burned ashes of the children’s bones.

Miyazaki was hanged in June of 2008.

. Metal-Toothed Man Kills Women, Serves Their Meat At Parties

This guy not only killed 7 women, but he served the meat to his friends, as well-cooked ethnic cuisine, at parties he would throw.Yes, that’s right, this guy had FRIENDS. He also lives in Kazakhstan. His friends didn’t know they were eating “long pig”.

He boasted has having killed 500 to 100 women, but these guys pretty much always do. He prided himself on trying to rid the world of prostitutes — a convenient ulterior motive for cannibals.

He also had his teeth replaced with metal fangs, which makes this guy the closest thing to a Bond villain I have ever even heard about in real life.

He was eventually caught when some drunk friends of his found a human head and intestines inside his fridge. So word to the wise: always raid your friends’ fridges. It’s for justice.

After 10 years of rehabilitation, he was released and according to this Cracked list is still at large.

As a reader, how did you felt after reading about this bone-chilling killers?
